Nancy Guthrie update: What the latest human remains discovery means—and where the case stands
As of mid-August 2026, investigators say human remains found in a desert area near Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson home are not connected to her February kidnapping, offering a rare public update in a case that has gripped the nation for more than six months.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department emphasized that the remains appear to have been at the site “for an extended period of time,” and stressed there is “no indication” they relate to the search for the 84-year-old mother of “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie.
The latest: Human remains found near Nancy Guthrie’s home
On Monday, August 17, 2026, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of human remains in a desert area near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard—about 15 miles from Nancy Guthrie’s residence.
Sheriff Chris Nanos’ office posted that the discovery was being handled by Search & Rescue deputies and that, at this time, there is no sign the remains are tied to the Guthrie investigation.
Officials did not immediately answer detailed questions about who found the remains, when they were discovered, or why they were confident there was no link to Nancy Guthrie’s case. The department said additional information would be released as it becomes available.
Why did they kidnap Savannah Guthrie’s mom?
Authorities have treated Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance as a kidnapping for ransom since early in the investigation.
The FBI has said an armed man was captured on surveillance footage at her home on the day she vanished, and the agency has released a physical description—5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10, average build—while increasing the reward for information.
Despite extensive work, investigators have not publicly identified suspects or persons of interest, and no one has been charged.
Family members, including Savannah Guthrie, have made emotional appeals, offering to pay ransom and pleading for Nancy’s safe return. A combined reward now tops $1.2 million for tips that lead to her recovery or a conviction.
What was found in Nancy Guthrie’s home?
When deputies first arrived at Nancy Guthrie’s Catalina Foothills home after she was reported missing, they noticed “something at the home that didn’t feel right,” which led them to conclude she had been forcibly taken.
Her wallet, cellphone, and vehicle were still at the residence, but she was nowhere to be found.
That early assessment—paired with surveillance video of an armed intruder—helped shift the case from a missing-person inquiry to an active abduction investigation.

Why the repeated “human remains” headlines?
Tucson’s desert landscape and sprawling foothills mean search teams and residents sometimes uncover old or unrelated remains during canvassing and tip-driven searches.
In at least two prior instances—February and May 2026—bones were found within miles of Nancy Guthrie’s home but were quickly determined to be unrelated, including one described as prehistoric.
The August 2026 discovery follows that pattern: unsettling, but not linked to her case, according to the sheriff’s office.
Who is Nancy Guthrie?
Nancy Guthrie is best known publicly as the mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC’s “Today.”
While much of the coverage centers on her family’s high profile, the investigation itself has unfolded like a classic Southwestern abduction mystery: a quiet neighborhood, surveillance footage of an armed visitor, and a sprawling search across desert terrain.
For Savannah Guthrie and her family, the months since February have been defined by public appeals, private grief, and a stubborn hope that Nancy will be found alive.
“Our priority is to locate Nancy—alive, if possible,” officials said early in the case, a line that still frames the investigation’s tone.
What happens next in the Nancy Guthrie case?
Sheriff Nanos has indicated that DNA analysis and video review remain central to the investigation.
With no named suspects and no breakthrough that has led to Nancy’s location, the case continues to rely on tips, forensic work, and the possibility that someone in the community recognizes something they saw months ago.
